How easy is the QTS Numeracy Test?

The numeracy professional skills tests to give it its proper title, or the QTS numeracy test as most people call it, is a potential hurdle for graduates wanting a career in teaching. You must pass the test to obtain Qualified Teacher Status. There is also an English test (literacy test) which students must also be pass.

Is it as difficult as people think? Many students do have a problem with the (numeracy) test. You can understand the frustration of somebody with a degree in say, Art & Design, but they cannot gain Qualified Teacher Status until they pass the test.

The good news is that with the right preparation it is possible to pass the test, even if maths isn't your strongest subject.

Passing the QTS Test is vital for Teaching

Like GCSE but Different

The QTS numeracy test is aimed at ‘GCSE level’ maths but delivered in a different way. It consists of two sections – mental arithmetic and a written section and is computer based. The questions are multiple choice and it is only the answer only that counts not the method used. There are 12 mental arithmetic questions and 16 written questions.

The most difficult section is the mental arithmetic - simply because it is in an aural format which was part of the GCSE maths exam in the 90’s, but not now. This means most students are not familiar with this style of question. this coupled with the speed factor means a lot of people struggle with this. You either pass or fail the QTS there is no grading structure. The pass mark is usually 18 out of 28. The result is known almost immediately after the test is completed.

Good Preparation is Key

You must prepare well for the QTS numeracy exam. The quote by Benjamin Franklin is very true 'By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail’. It is about technique as much as mathematical knowledge. Answering questions quickly is essential.
