Entering for the Examination
You can take the GCSE in either summer or November. Summer exams are held in early June.
Contact your local exam centre (see above for list of centres) in early January for the summer exams, and for November exams contact them in early September. You will entering as an external or private candidate. Speak to the examination officer at the centre, and arrange with them to take the exam, giving the details below. Be aware there is a separate fee for this payable to the centre.
Note: although the course is suitable for all three examination boards, in our experience AQA is the best examination board for external candidates. From 2009, when you enter for the exam you have the choice of 2 options:
Either:
- Syllabus code A 4306/F linear or non modular AQA examination, for foundation tier covering grades C to G
Or:
- Syllabus code A 4306/H linear or non modular AQA examination, for higher tier covering grades A* to D
Since most people are looking for a grade C or above the higher tier is usually chosen.
Edexcel and OCR examination boards have different codes. If you choose these examination boards their codes are:
- Edexcel: 1380 linear and either foundation or higher level.
- OCR: A-J512 and either foundation or higher level.
